On August 23, 1992, the legendary Dennis Eckersley became the first player to record 40 saves in four separate seasons. While he may be best known for giving up a walk-off home run to an injured Kirk Gibson in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, he was one of the best closers of his generation. He started his career as a starter and is one of only two pitchers to record a 20-win season as well as a 50-save season in his career. Eckersley finished the 1992 season with 51 saves on a 1.91 ERA and won both the AL Cy Young Award and the AL MVP.
