In 2004, The US women’s basketball team went undefeated and won a fifth gold medal at the Athens Olympics. They beat Australia 74-63 in the final. The star-studded squad consisted of WNBA legends including Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Lisa Leslie, and Diana Taurasi. The United States team consisted of a total of twelve players and competed in group B. The team finished with the only perfect record of 5-0 in group play. In the knockout stage, the U.S. faced Greece in the quarterfinals, in which they eliminated the hosts in a decisive 102-72 win. The semifinals saw a much closer match, the U.S. narrowly defeated Russia 66-62. Tina Thompson of the US-led the team in scoring against Russia with 14 points in the game. Overall, Lisa Leslie led the US squad in the Athens Olympics averaging 15.1 points, 8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks. Leslie averaged the most blocks out of any player at the games.
