Today in Sports History: August 8

In 1992, the Dream Team won the gold at the Barcelona Olympics after defeating Croatia 117-85. It was the first time NBA players were allowed to compete on the international stage and the team included a star-studded lineup with the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, all 11 NBA stars were later inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame. At the time the games were much more lopsided,  the US Dream Team won by an average margin of 44 points per game. Since the introduction of NBA players, the United States has won gold in seven out of the last eight Olympics. Team USA most recently defeated France for the gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
