Today in Sports History: December 11

On this day in 2018, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich surpassed Hall of Fame coach Pat Riley for fourth on the all-time victories list. The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Phoenix Suns 111-86, to give Popvich his 1,211nd win.  Popovich currently holds the longest tenure in the NBA with 24 years as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs and is now third on the all-time victories list (1222). Popvich is known for preaching team basketball and his no-nonsense and intense style of coaching has led the Spurs to five NBA Championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014). Popovich is just one of five coaches in history with five-or-more NBA Championships.
