Today in Sports History: December 19

On December 19, 1984, at 23 years old, Wayne Gretzky became the youngest player ever to reach 1,000 career points. Besides being the youngest player to reach 1,000 points, he is also the only player to reach 1,000 career points twice—i.e., he is the only NHL player in history with more than 2,000 points, and he surpassed that by a long shot, almost reaching it a third time. Gretzky won an astounding nine Hart Memorial Trophies, given to the MVP in the NHL. Needless to say, Gretzky was inducted into the Hall of Fame and is widely considered one of the greatest of all time.
