Today in Sports History: February 27

On February 27, 1959, Bob Cousy set what was at the time an NBA record and still stands as the Boston Celtics’ all-time record with 28 assists. The Celtics beat the Minneapolis Lakers, who were led by Elgin Baylor, 173-139. The 173 points is one of the highest totals for a single team in a non-overtime game in NBA history, and this was before the three-point line was implemented in the game. Cousy had 31 points to go along with his 28 assists, while the Celtics were also led by 43 points and 11 rebounds from Tom Heinsohn, along with five additional double-digit scorers for Boston.
