In 2016, football star Lionel Messi was awarded the FIFA Ballon D’Or for the best soccer player. The Barcelona and Argentine international striker had received more votes than Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. With his fifth win in seven years, Messi set a new record for the most Ballon D’Or wins. 

Messi received 41.33% in votes from national sports journalists, team captains, and team coaches, whereas Ronaldo received 27.76% and Neymar received 7.86% in votes.

During the season, Messi scored 48 goals for both club and country teams. He scored 43 goals for Barcelona, which made him the second-highest scorer in La Liga. He also had 21 assists which helped the club win three titles including La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League.
