The Portland Trail Blazers retired the symbolic #77 jersey in honor of Coach Jack Ramsay in 1993. Ramsay received the symbolic no. 77 jersey in honor to commemorate the Blazers 1977 championship. Ramsay started as general manager for the Philadelphia 76ers and was later promoted to head coach. During his four seasons with the 76ers, Ramsay led the team to three playoffs. He was known for his aggressive pressing defense and emphasis on fitness. In the1971-2 season, Ramsay became head coach for the Buffalo Braves and led the Braves to the playoffs his second season. Ramsay then became the head coach for the Portland Trail Blazers where he led the Blazers to their first NBA title in 1977 and he coached the Western Conference side in the 1978 All-Star Game. After he retired from coaching, Ramsay became a television color commentator for the 76ers and the Miami Heat. Ramsay also was voted one of the 10 greatest coaches in NBA History and selected as one of the six members honored in the Blazer’s Walk of Fame.
