On January 16, 1988, the St. Louis Cardinals (of the NFL) announced that they would move to Phoenix to become the Phoenix Cardinals—now known as the Arizona Cardinals. In their first year in Phoenix, they started the season 7-4 and were first in the NFC East, but lost five games in a row to end the season 7-9 and missed the playoffs. They played at Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium for the first 18 years of their time in Phoenix and changed their names to the better-known Arizona Cardinals in 1994. In franchise history, they have been to one Super Bowl, losing an epic Super Bowl XLIII to the Pittsburgh Steelers, led by Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald to that Super Bowl.
