In 1974, Notre Dame beat UCLA, 71-70 in South Bend, Indiana to end the Bruins’ NCAA-record 88-game basketball win streak. Coincidentally, the Bruins streak started three years earlier following a loss to Notre Dame. The Bruins were a basketball powerhouse in the 60’s and 70’s, led by players such as Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Jabbar helped the Bruins win three titles in 1967-1969. Walton continued the success and led the team to win consecutive NCAA championships in 1972 and 1973, the team went 60-0 during his time on the team. Of course, the Bruins were also led by legendary coach John Wooden who helped guide the team to ten titles over his 40 year career as head coach of the UCLA Bruins. Wooden retired with an 885-203 overall career win-loss record.
