In 1991, the United States Basketball League had its first female referee. Sandhi Ortiz-Del Valle became officiates a men’s professional basketball game between the New Haven Skyhawks and the Philadelphia Spirit. According to the New York Daily News, her uniform and whistle were sent to the Basketball Hall of Fame and put on display after the game.
