Today in Sports History: July 3

In 2001, the Vancouver Grizzlies became the Memphis Grizzlies. The NBA expansion team formed in 1995 and joined the Toronto Raptors as one of only two NBA teams in Canada but had little success. The team was ranked 14th in attendance and averaged fewer than 13,000 fans per game.

This relocation was the first move since the Kings left Kansas City for Sacramento in 1986. Since their move south, the Grizzlies have made 10 playoff appearances, including sever back-to-back in the 2010-17 “Grit and Grind” era. The team finished 8th in the most recent Eastern Conference Finals.
