The Vancouver Grizzlies moved to Memphis with the approval of the NBA Board of Governors in 2001. This was the first time since the 1985-86 season when the Kansas City Kings made a move to Sacramento. The Grizzlies started as an expansion team in 1995 and never reached the playoffs prior to their southern move. It would take almost another ten years before the franchise won a playoff series in 2011.
