It was a sad day for the Boston Celtics when Bill Russell announced his retirement in 1969. Russell was known for his defensive skills, shot-blocking, and ability to grab both defensive and offensive rebounds. During his debut with the Boston Celtics, Russell scored six points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Prior to his NBA debut, Russell was the captain of the U.S. national basketball team that competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics. the U.S. team won the gold medal in Melbourne after winning a close game against the Soviet Union team. Russell played 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics and participated in 11 NBA championships. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975.
