Today in Sports History: March 1

On March 1, 1981, Calvin Murphy of the Houston Rockets missed a free throw in San Antonio, ending his NBA record consecutive free throw streak at 78. The streak was eventually broken by Micheal Williams, whose streak in 1996 eventually reached 97 and stands to this day. Murphy was named to the NBA All-Rookie team in his first year, and made one All-Star Game, averaging 18 points per game over his career. Murphy’s #23 was retired by the Houston Rockets, and he is known for being the shortest player ever inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, at 5’9”.
