Today in Sports History: March 18

In 2001, Reggie Miller recorded a memorable 3-point field goal during an Indiana Pacers versus Sacramento Kings game. Miller was the first player to tally 2,000 points from field goals. Miller ended his career with 2,560 3-point field goals and is currently second in the league’s rankings. Ray Allen is in first place with 2,973. Although the 3-point field goal is now a common occurrence, the NBA did not introduce the 3-point field goal until the 1979-80 season. The 3-point field goal was first used professionally by the now defunct American Basketball League (ABL) in 1961. The American Basketball Association (ABA) later included the 3-point shot along with other showy tactics like the slam dunk contest. The NBA adopted these fan-friendly tactics in the early 80s and made the game what it is today.
