Today in Sports History: March 31

In 1988, former professional hockey player, and New York Islanders defenseman, Denis Potvin, scored 1,000 points and played in 1,000 NHL games. 

Potvin played for the Islanders from 1973-to 1988. Throughout 1,060 games played, he scored 310 goals, had 742 assists, and 1,052 points. He led the Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cup Championships from 1980- to 83. He was also awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy in 1974 and the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 1976, 1978, and 1979. 

He was a 5-time NHL First All-Star Team, 2-time NHL Second All-Star Team, 9-time NHL All-Star, and named to the list of the 100 Greatest NHL Players. 

Later in his career, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991 for his outstanding career and incredible accomplishments and accolades.
