Today in Sports History: November 26

In 1961, NHL all-star Gordie Howe played in his 1000th game. He was the first player to make it to the 1,000-game mark and retired with 1,767 NHL games under his belt. Howe, nicknamed Mr. Hockey, is known as one of the sport’s greatest athletes. He is a 23-time NHL All Star and previously held records for goals (801), assists (1049), and total points (1850). Wayne Gretzky has since surpassed Howe’s numbers and Patrick Marleau has surpassed his record for games played. Howe is still the only player to have competed in the NHL in five different decades and was the first recipient of the NHL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
