Today in Sports History: November 8

On November 8, 1991, Paul Coffey scored the 311th goal of his career, setting the record for most goals by a defenseman in a career. He would finish his career with 396 goals, but his goal total was surpassed by fellow defender Ray Bourque in each of their last seasons. Coffey is still second all-time among NHL defensemen in career goals, assists, and points, behind Bourque in all categories. He helped lead his team to four Stanley Cup championships in his career, and still holds the record for most goals in a single season by a defender, with 48.
