In 2014, American tennis player, Serena Williams, beat Romanian tennis player, Simona Halep, to defend her WTA Finals Title. She won 6-3 and 6-0 in Singapore.
Williams became professional in 1995 and in 1998 she entered her first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open.
Williams became the fifth player of all time to win four straight titles and was the ninth player of all time to get a career Grand Slam this early on in her career. She went on to win a total of 73 single titles and 23 doubles titles. That includes 39 Grand Slam titles – 23 of her singles titles, 14 doubles titles, and two mixed doubles titles.Â
She has won seven Australian Open titles, seven Wimbledon titles, six U.S Open titles, and three Roland Garros titles. She also played on the American Fed Cup Team in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2012-13, and 2015.
She is a three-time Olympian and four-time Olympic gold medalist. She participated in the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics, the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, and the 2012 London Olympic games. In 2000 and 2008, she won a gold medal in doubles. And in 2008, she ranked 5th place for singles. In 2012, she won a gold medal in both singles and doubles. She participated in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic games but placed in 9th place for singles and 17th for doubles.
For 319 weeks, she was ranked the No. 1 player in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association, including 186 consecutive weeks from February 2013 to September 2016.
The movie, ‘King Richards’ was produced and released as a movie that explained how the Williams sisters became who they are after being coached by their father Richard Williams.
Williams recently announced she will evolve and eventually retire from the sport of tennis. She recently played in the US Open and was knocked out in the Third Round.
