Today in Sports History: October 4

On October 4, 1967, the World Series between the Red Sox and the Cardinals began at Fenway Park, making it the first Fall Classic since 1948 to include either the Yankees, Giants, or Dodgers. Boston was led by triple crown winner, AL MVP, and future Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski. St. Louis was led by future Hall of Famers Lou Brock, Steve Carlton, Orlando Cepeda, and World Series MVP Bob Gibson. The Cardinals won the series in seven games, making it the franchise’s second World Series title in four years, and eighth championship overall.
