On October 5, 1983, hockey legend Wayne Gretzky scored a goal and assisted on a goal in the Edmonton Oilers’ season opener against Toronto, starting an NHL record scoring streak. The streak would end on January 28, 1984 at 51 consecutive games with a point, which stands to this day as the record for the longest consecutive point-scoring streak. It is one of many records for “the Great One,” which includes 40 regular season records and 15 playoff records according to NHL.com. Gretzky is considered by many to be the greatest hockey player of all time, as is shown by the fact that he had his waiting period waived and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame immediately after his retirement, and that his iconic number 99 was retired across the NHL.
